NEWS AT A GLANCE
Controversial Tree Felling in Whitewebbs Sparks Outrage Across Enfield
This is not the Oak Tree.
A wave of shock and anger swept across Enfield — and much of North London — on Tuesday, 15 April, after it was revealed that a 500-year-old oak tree in Whitewebbs Park had been felled without council permission. The incident, which has gained national attention through reports by the BBC and Enfield Dispatch, has stirred public outrage and sparked heated debate across the community.
The tree, located behind the Toby Carvery at Whitewebbs House, was cut down earlier this month by order of the pub chain’s parent company, Mitchells and Butlers, who initially claimed it was dead and posed a health risk. However, visible green shoots from the remains of the tree have since disproved that claim.
The felling has been condemned by local residents, conservationists, and councillors alike. Enfield Council, who leases the land to Toby Carvery, said it had not granted permission for the felling and has reported the incident to the police as criminal damage. An emergency Tree Preservation Order (TPO) has now been issued.
The controversy is heightened by the tree’s proximity to land involved in a Tottenham Hotspur Women’s Academy development, though there is no evidence the football club was involved.
Locals and campaigners say the ancient oak — among the 100 largest in London — was not just a tree, but a symbol of Enfield’s natural heritage. Many are calling for stricter protections and accountability.

Council Leader Responds to Outrage Over Felling of Ancient Whitewebbs Oak

Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ergin Erbil
Following widespread public anger over the felling of a 500-year-old oak tree in Whitewebbs Park, Enfield Council has come under pressure to respond. The tree, one of the oldest and most significant in the borough, was cut down by contractors working on behalf of Toby Carvery without prior council approval.
As local residents, conservationists, and community groups voiced their distress and demanded accountability, the Leader of Enfield Council, Cllr Ergin Erbil, issued the following statement:
“Enfield Council cares deeply about protecting trees and green spaces in the borough.
We were recently made aware of the felling of an ancient oak tree in Whitewebbs Wood, which occurred on 3 April. The Council was not informed of this incident until last week. Our teams immediately carried out a full site inspection to assess the damage after receiving reports of the damage done to the tree.
We are treating the matter as criminal damage and have reported it to the police. We have now placed a legal protection (Tree Preservation Order) on the tree and are looking at ways to help it grow back.
We will work closely with the police as they continue their investigation into this matter.”
The council's response comes amid growing calls for better protection of ancient trees and green spaces across the borough.
Green Lights for Greener Schools: Enfield Schools Lead Eco-Revolution
Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan has unveiled a landmark £2.9 million ‘Greener Schools’ initiative, set to transform classrooms across London with solar panels, heat pumps, and energy-efficient upgrades. A total of 38 schools in 16 boroughs—including three in Enfield—will benefit, thanks to an additional £9.6 million co-funded by local councils.
Local Impact
Enfield’s Capel Manor Primary, Durants School, and Garfield Primary are among the first to receive eco-upgrades such as insulation, LED lighting, and renewable energy systems. These changes are projected to slash energy bills by an average of £15,000 per school annually, freeing up funds for books, technology, and staff support.
Empowering Future Leaders
Beyond infrastructure, the program includes sustainability projects like water conservation workshops, nurturing students as eco-leaders. Mayor Khan emphasized the dual benefit: “This cuts costs for schools, reduces emissions, and empowers young Londoners to tackle climate change.” He urged the government to expand the model nationally, estimating potential savings of £50 million yearly if all London schools adopted similar measures.
A Net-Zero Vision
The initiative aligns with London’s 2030 net-zero target. “By partnering with boroughs, we’re building a greener, fairer city for everyone,” Khan added.
Enfield families can celebrate their schools’ role in this pioneering effort—proof that small changes today can spark a brighter, cleaner tomorrow.
Enfield Speaks: Cleaner Streets & Safer Communities Top Residents’ Wishlist

Gif by dinosally on Giphy
Thousands of Enfield residents have had their say on the borough’s biggest priorities—and cleaner streets and reducing crime came out on top.
In a recent poll by Love Your Doorstep (LYDS), over 4,200 locals shared what improvements would make Enfield feel like a "better place to live again." Waste and cleanliness topped the list (13%), followed closely by crime reduction (11.5%) and better value for council tax (8.8%).
Other key concerns included more visible policing, road repairs, protecting green spaces, and support for community events.
Emma Rigby, LYDS founder, said: “This isn’t about politics—it’s about people. Residents care deeply about their community and want practical changes, from cleaner streets to clearer communication from the council.”
The full results will be shared with Enfield Council, MPs, and local leaders to help shape future decisions. LYDS will also publish a detailed community report later this month, with follow-up discussions to turn feedback into action.
Top 3 Priorities for Enfield:
1️⃣ Cleaner public spaces (13%)
2️⃣ Reducing crime (11.5%)
3️⃣ Better council tax value (8.8%)

FOOTBALL
Chelmsford City 1 – Enfield Town 2:

Resilient Enfield Turn the Tide in Survival Showdown
Enfield Town continued their remarkable turnaround with a vital 2-1 away win at Chelmsford City, extending their unbeaten run to seven matches. Once bottom of the table at New Year, the team now sits 19th, six points clear of the relegation zone after leapfrogging Salisbury.
Despite falling behind in the first half, goals from Bailey Brown and Jack Bates turned the game around. Enfield dominated most of the match, showing resilience in defence and capitalising on key moments. Bates' 75th-minute strike sealed the win, sending the travelling fans into celebration.
Manager Gavin Macpherson praised the team’s momentum and resilience, but urged caution ahead of a critical Good Friday derby against St Albans, which could secure their National League South status.
The club also expressed sympathy for Chelmsford manager Robbie Simpson, who missed the game due to a family bereavement.
