COUNCIL UPDATES

Enfield Council Confirms Closure of Seven Libraries

study room, University library of Trnava University, education, study, learning, bookcase

Enfield Council has approved the closure of seven libraries despite public opposition, following a full council vote on February 27th. Initially proposing to close eight of the borough’s 16 libraries, the council decided to keep Oakwood Library open after receiving 2,400 consultation responses.

The following libraries will close:

  • Southgate Library

  • Winchmore Hill Library

  • John Jackson Library (Bush Hill Park)

  • Bullsmoor Library

  • Enfield Highway Library

  • Bowes Road Library

  • Enfield Island Library

The closures aim to save £560,000 annually, with potential building sales generating up to £3.85m. Conservative councillors criticized the decision, arguing it disregards public concern, while Labour defended it as a necessary financial move due to government funding cuts. More information from Enfield Dispatch.

Enfield Council Passes Controversial 2025/26 Budget Amid Fierce Debate

Enfield Council has approved its 2025/26 budget after a heated two-hour debate at Enfield Civic Centre on Thursday, February 27th. The Labour administration defended its financial plan, which includes £30m in government-backed Exceptional Financial Support (EFS), £18m in savings, a 5% council tax increase, and a £5m withdrawal from reserves to balance the budget.

Conservative councillors criticized the budget, with shadow finance member James Hockney warning that Enfield was on the brink of bankruptcy. He argued that Labour’s financial strategy, with debt set to reach £1.5bn, was leading to service cuts, including reduced bin collections and delays in fly-tipping prevention measures. Tory councillor Lee Chamberlain described the budget as a “spiral heading towards the drain”, pointing to £31m in annual debt repayments.

Labour councillors blamed government underfunding for the financial strain, with council leader Ergin Erbil accusing the opposition of lacking a plan for Enfield. Planning cabinet member Susan Erbil defended the use of capital receipts through EFS, saying it would support key projects, including the Meridian Water housing development.

Despite strong opposition, the budget was passed unamended by 30 votes to 21, along party lines.

Enfield Council Leader Issues Statement to Appease Residents Over Library Closures

Following public feedback, Enfield Council has confirmed that nine libraries will remain open, including Oakwood Library, after proposing closures in its recent budget. The decision reflects the libraries' high usage, accounting for 90% of visits.

The council plans to invest £1.5 million over the next year to modernise facilities at libraries such as Ordnance Unity Centre, Edmonton Green, and Enfield Town. Talks are also underway to create a community space in Enfield Island Village.

Council Leader Cllr Ergin Erbil said:

“By focusing on the most-used libraries and modernising them, we will create hubs for learning, creativity, health, and wellbeing. Retaining Oakwood Library shows we’ve listened to residents.”

The move aims to balance financial challenges with maintaining vital community services.

TfL Enhances A10 Safety with New Cameras and Road Markings

Night highway

Transport for London (TfL), Enfield Council, and the Metropolitan Police are implementing new safety measures on the A10 to tackle speeding and reduce collisions. Key changes include extending the average-speed camera system from Southbury Road to the A406, replacing older ‘spot speed’ cameras, and introducing clearer lane markings and traffic signals.

Since average-speed cameras were installed on the northern A10 in 2020, fatal and serious collisions have dropped by over 50%, with none recorded in 2023-2024. A High Court injunction also bans ‘car cruising’ meets, with offenders facing arrest and potential imprisonment.

TfL has lowered speed limits on 264km of roads to 20mph, while the Met aims to penalise up to one million speeding drivers by 2025. Enfield Council praised the measures, citing long-standing concerns over dangerous driving. These efforts support the Mayor’s Vision Zero goal to eliminate road deaths and serious injuries in London.

Perry Scott Appointed Interim Chief Executive of Enfield Council

If you’re not aware, you should know by now that Enfield Council has a new Chief Executive! Perry Scott has been appointed as the Interim Chief Executive, stepping into the role following Ian Davis’s departure after 17 years of service. Ian is set to take on a new challenge as Chief Executive of Lambeth Council at the end of March.

Perry is no stranger to Enfield, having served as the Executive Director of Environment and Communities since January 2024. In this role, he’s been at the helm of a wide range of services—from parks and libraries to highways and waste management—working to make them more effective and sustainable for the community. With over a decade of experience in local government, including roles at Harrow and Hillingdon, Perry brings a wealth of expertise, particularly in procurement.

In his own words, Perry is “very proud” to take on this new challenge, expressing his commitment to tackling the challenges faced by local authorities while continuing to deliver high-quality services for Enfield residents. Council Leader Cllr Ergin Erbil also shared his gratitude for Ian’s years of service and his enthusiasm for working with Perry to build a “cleaner, safer, and fairer borough.”

So, there you have it—a fresh chapter for Enfield Council, with Perry Scott leading the way!

Enfield Town Fall Short Against Dorking

Enfield Town FC 0 | 2 Dorking Wanderers

Enfield Town battled hard but suffered a 2-0 defeat to league leaders Dorking Wanderers on Saturday. Missing key defender Adam Thompson, Town held firm, with goalkeeper Joe Wright making crucial saves before Jason Prior struck just before half-time.

A second-half resurgence saw Town earn a penalty, but Sam Youngs’ Panenka attempt was easily saved, shifting momentum back to Dorking. A late defensive error gifted Charlie Carter a second goal, sealing the result.

Despite the loss, manager Gavin Macpherson praised his team’s effort. With Town slipping into the relegation zone, next week’s clash with Salisbury is now a must-win.
