NEWS AT A GLANCE

Enfield Mayor Honours Residents for New Year’s Day Parade Participation

The Lord Mayor of London on the 19th March awarded medals in appreciation to residents who represented the borough at the London New Year’s Day Parade 2025. The ceremony which was presided over by the Mayor of Enfield at the Civic Centre, was a thank you to residents who participated. The Mayor of Enfield celebrated the participants for their dedication and sacrifices in braving harsh weather conditions to showcase Enfield’s spirit on a national stage.

Despite cold and rainy weather, the participants marched proudly from Pall Mall to Westminster, embodying resilience and community pride. The event was organised by Gary Kousoulou, a local optician, who ensured diversity was at the heart of the celebration. Collaborating with local businesses, Kousoulou arranged sponsored T-shirts featuring the Enfield crest and flags representing the borough’s multicultural community.

The Mayor praised the residents as heroes, acknowledging their commitment to leaving family and friends on New Year’s Day to represent Enfield. The ceremony highlighted the importance of community spirit and celebrated the borough’s vibrant diversity.

This event not only honored the participants but also reinforced Enfield’s values of unity, resilience, and inclusivity.

Enfield Council Commissions Review of Meridian Water Project

Enfield Council has confirmed that it has hired independent property experts Savills to conduct a full review of its flagship Meridian Water housing scheme, amid rising costs and growing financial concerns.

The review comes as the council’s debt approaches £1.5bn, with around a third tied to the £6bn project. The goal is to assess the scheme’s financial viability and explore less risky ways to move forward.

Despite recent delays, unexpected site issues, and legal challenges, the council says it remains fully committed to delivering 10,000 homes, new infrastructure, and community benefits over the 25-year programme.

Over 200 students at St Anne’s Catholic High School for Girls in Enfield successfully switched off their phones and digital devices for a full week as part of a Digital Detox Challenge.

The initiative helped students improve focus, reduce stress, and discover new hobbies—all while reflecting on their experience through digital journals. From reading and colouring to playing instruments, students found creative ways to stay engaged without screens.

Each participant earned a Digital Detox badge and certificate, with a special celebration planned to mark their achievement.

🧑‍🎓 Enfield Council Commits to Strengthening Youth Services

Enfield Council leader Cllr Ergin Erbil has confirmed there are no plans to close any youth centres in the borough, emphasising that the focus is on improving services through stronger partnerships with local voluntary and community groups.

The Council is currently in discussions with organisations about delivering enhanced activities at Croyland and Allan Pullinger youth centres, and aims to expand collaboration across all centres.

Enfield’s youth services already offer a wide range of support—from mentoring and sports to creative workshops, life skills training, and career development—as well as mobile outreach for young people not attending centres.

🚗 Enfield Council Supports Increased Parking and Traffic Penalty Charges

Courtesy: Enfield Council

Enfield Council has welcomed the London-wide increase in parking and traffic penalty charges, set to take effect from 7 April 2025. The changes aim to improve road safety, reduce congestion, and support better enforcement of parking rules across the borough.

The council’s enforcement partner, NSL, is recruiting 16 additional Civil Enforcement Officers who will patrol more frequently—including evenings and bank holidays—on foot, in vehicles, and on mopeds.

Revenue from Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) covers enforcement costs, with any surplus reinvested in local transport schemes and concessionary fares like the Freedom Pass.

Cllr Rick Jewell, Cabinet Member for Transport and Waste, stressed that most drivers follow the rules, but warned that those who obstruct roads or park illegally will face stricter enforcement.

As we enter the week of March 24, 2025, global markets face uncertainty due to economic moderation and policy concerns. Key events include:

  • Flash PMI data on Monday

  • US economic indicators (PCE, GDP, durable goods)

  • UK inflation and retail sales

  • German business sentiment

Global GDP growth is expected to slow from 3.2% in 2024 to 3.1% in 2025. Inflation persists, and market volatility is likely due to geopolitical and economic shifts.
