Residents Urged to Report as Council Tackles Waste Crisis; Campaigners Vow to Continue Fight Against Whitewebbs Park Plans

Good Morning!
Happy Monday, 17th February! We hope you’ve recovered from a love-filled Valentine’s weekend. On this day in 2005, the Kyoto Protocol, aimed at combating global warming, took effect—though the US and Australia notably refused to support it. Fast forward to today, and similar tensions surround the Paris Accord, highlighting the ongoing challenges in addressing climate change.
Closer to home, Enfield Council is feeling the strain of budget cuts, with fly-tipping on the rise and demonstrators continuing to protest the decision to convert Whitewebbs Park into a football academy.

NEWS AT A GLANCE
Enfield Cracks Down on Fly-Tipping: Residents Urged to Report as Council Tackles Waste Crisis
Enfield Council is tackling a surge in fly-tipping with a new campaign urging residents to report incidents. The council leader recently joined street cleaners in a social media video to highlight the issue, which has sparked mixed reactions.
While some praised the effort, residents pointed to reduced rubbish collections, removed bins, and changes to bulky waste services as key causes. One resident said, “Weekly collections and more bins would reduce fly-tipping. Fewer services mean more dumping.”
Others noted inefficiencies, like waste trucks ignoring dumped rubbish unless reported via the ‘Love Clean Streets’ app. Calls for weekly collections and larger bins have grown, with hopes the council will address these concerns.

Campaigners Vow to Continue Fight Against Whitewebbs Park Plans
Protesters gathered at Whitewebbs Park on yesterday 16th February to oppose Tottenham Hotspur’s plans to build a women’s and girls’ football academy, which would fence off 16 hectares of the park. Around 150 demonstrators, holding banners like “Save Whitewebbs,” criticised the loss of public green space and ecological impact.
The protest followed Enfield Council’s approval of the project on Tuesday, February 11th, which campaigners argue prioritises profit over biodiversity. Ecologist Russell Miller urged attendees to lobby London Mayor Sadiq Khan to intervene, while wildlife expert Benny Hawksbee praised the park’s rewilding success since 2021.
Despite Spurs’ claims of boosting women’s football, the decision has split the community and councillors, with Labour supporting and Conservatives opposing the plans.

Enfield Council Accelerates Estate Regeneration Plans
Enfield Council is fast-tracking the redevelopment of Joyce Avenue and Snells Park estates in Angel Edmonton, aiming to complete the project in 15 years instead of 20. The £800 million scheme will replace 795 homes with 2,028 new units, half of which will be affordable, including a net increase of 191 social homes.
The first four phases, funded by £92.2 million from the government’s Affordable Homes Programme, will deliver 575 homes, with 481 being affordable. The remaining 1,453 homes will be developed in later phases, though the strategy for this is still undecided.
At a recent scrutiny panel, Cllr Ayten Guzel acknowledged financial challenges but stressed the project’s importance for community building. Opposition councillors raised concerns about costs and building heights, while Joanne Drew, director of housing and regeneration, highlighted £50 million in funding secured from the Greater London Authority.

Winter Woes Over? UK Set for Dramatic Temperature Surge!
After weeks of icy conditions, freezing rain, and “Scandinavian High” chills, the UK is finally set for a dramatic warm-up. Temperatures across the country are predicted to rise sharply from Tuesday, reaching 13°C or 14°C by midweek—well above seasonal averages of 6°C in Scotland and 9°C in southern England.
The shift comes after a brutal January, with widespread snow and ice, and February’s “anticyclonic gloom” leaving some areas without sunshine for over a week. Met Office meteorologist Tom Morgan said the Atlantic will push milder air across the UK, though the change will be gradual.
While not record-breaking, the warmer weather will bring relief from frostbite risks and dull skies, with sunshine expected in many areas by Monday. However, it won’t surpass the UK’s February record of 21.2°C set in 2019.

Tottenham Secures Crucial Win Against Man United
Tottenham Hotspur 1 | 0 Manchester United

James Maddison responded to critics by scoring the winning goal in Tottenham's 1-0 victory over Manchester United on Sunday. After tapping in a rebound from Andre Onana's save, Maddison celebrated with a "talking and shushing" gesture, referencing recent criticism.
Earlier in the week, Roy Keane had questioned Maddison's impact, suggesting Spurs wouldn't break into the top six with him. Maddison, who recently returned from injury, acknowledged the criticism but emphasized his focus on performing on the pitch.
The goal marked his 10th of the season and his first in the Premier League since December. Maddison admitted that while he tries to ignore outside noise, criticism from high-profile figures can be hard to avoid.
Thrilling Victory Propels Town Out of Relegation Zone!
Chesham United 1 | 3 Enfield Town FC
In a stunning display of resilience and teamwork, Town secured a crucial 3-1 victory against Chesham, marking their first win over a bogey team and lifting them out of the relegation zone for the first time since August!
Despite a last-minute selection crisis, with key players Henry Hawkins and Xavier Benjamin unavailable, Town delivered one of their most impressive performances of the season. Sam Youngs opened the scoring with a clinical finish, followed by a second goal just before halftime after Hisham Kasimu’s effort rebounded into his path.
Chesham fought back in the second half, pulling one back, but Town’s newfound steeliness shone through. Ollie Knight, returning to the squad, sealed the win with a sublime finish, while Adam Thompson’s heroic efforts—including playing part of the game in a sock after losing his boot—epitomized the team’s determination.
Manager Gavin Macpherson praised the squad’s fight and professionalism, especially Knight’s impactful return. With only league leaders Dorking boasting a better recent record, Town’s resurgence is a testament to hard work, shrewd management, and unwavering team spirit.
The message is clear: Towners are on the rise, but the focus remains on staying grounded. Onwards and upwards! 🚀⚽
