NEWS AT A GLANCE
Enfield Council Explores Future Options for Dugdale Arts Centre

Enfield Council is currently considering various options for the future operation of Dugdale Arts Centre in an effort to reduce running costs and improve efficiency.
The Enfield Town arts complex, which underwent a £1.5 million refurbishment three years ago, houses a theatre, café, museum, and hireable community spaces. Despite these amenities, the centre continues to operate at a financial loss, prompting the council to seek solutions to make it more sustainable.
According to sources, the 2025/26 budget, approved by councillors last month, includes a targeted annual saving of over £200,000 from the facility. The council remains committed to ensuring the best operational model for the arts centre while addressing financial challenges. Click for more information.

£7.15M Funding Announced to Tackle Pollution in London’s Rivers

A £7.15 million funding initiative has been announced by City Hall and Transport for London (TfL) to combat pollution in London’s waterways. The investment will support large-scale rewilding projects and provide grants through the Green Roots Fund to community groups and charities working on waterway improvement initiatives.
A key focus of the funding is to prevent road run-off pollution—which includes contaminants such as fertilizers, oil, and pesticides—from entering rivers and streams. The initiative aims to enhance water quality, protect aquatic life, and aligns with the mayor’s commitment to achieving "swimmable" waterways by 2034.
As part of this effort, Mayor Sadiq Khan hosted a roundtable discussion at Walthamstow Wetlands with representatives from Thames Water, the London Wildlife Trust, TfL, and various charities to explore collaborative strategies for cleaning up the capital’s rivers. He emphasized that improving water quality is both an environmental and social justice issue, highlighting the need for collective action to restore and maintain London’s waterways.

Mayor Khan Intervenes to Save Tube Station Book Exchanges Amid Public Backlash
Mayor Sadiq Khan has stepped in to halt Transport for London’s (TfL) removal of book exchange libraries from Tube stations following widespread criticism. The decision to dismantle these community-led bookshares was initially driven by fire safety concerns raised by the London Fire Brigade (LFB).
The LFB had flagged the risk of combustible materials in underground stations, prompting TfL to take action. However, the removal sparked public outcry, with images of empty bookshelves circulating on social media and commuters expressing disappointment over the loss of these much-loved exchanges.
In response, Mayor Khan has urged TfL and LFB to find a solution that prioritises safety without eliminating the cultural value of the book exchanges. “These bookshares bring joy to many Londoners,” Khan stated, calling for their reinstatement.
TfL and LFB are now exploring alternative options, raising hopes for the return of London’s underground book exchanges.
New Upcycled Artwork Unveiled at Dugdale Arts Centre

The Dugdale Arts Centre in Enfield has revealed a stunning new mural, created using reclaimed paint as part of a community-driven sustainability initiative. The artwork, produced in collaboration with the North London Waste Authority (NLWA) and the Forest Recycling Project (FRP), is a vibrant display of creativity and environmental consciousness.
🎨 Sustainability Through Art
The project highlights the potential of upcycling in public art, with artists repurposing leftover paint collected from recycling centers. By breathing new life into materials that would have otherwise gone to waste, the initiative aligns with Enfield’s sustainability goals, showcasing how creativity can drive environmental awareness.

🏛 A Community Effort
The Dugdale Arts Centre continues to serve as a hub for art, culture, and community engagement. This latest artwork adds to the growing cultural identity of Enfield, offering visitors an inspiring visual experience rooted in local collaboration and sustainability.
